A fallen Soldier

The Department of Defense has announced the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Pfc. Willard M. Kerchief III, 21, of Evansville, Ind., died Aug. 16 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered from enemy small arms fire during combat operations in Taramiyah, Iraq.

I had the pleasure of knowing PFC Powell-Kerchief. (He legally hyphenated his last name before deployment). He often visited my neighbors on Sunday afternoons to watch NFL football games and have dinner. We would all get together and have dinner and talk. He was a kind young gentleman, and always respectful. He will be missed dearly. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, and the soldiers who served along side PFC Powell-Kerchief.

It saddens me that one so young has paid the ultimate price for our freedom. We are proud of Willard that he would stand between us and those that wish to do us evil. In his short life he has accomplished more for the greater good than most can hope to do in a lifetime, and for this he is a role model for us and for his generation.

Amie:

Your husband must be in my son Austin's Brigade. I read about the death of Pfc. Kerchief on the "news" page. Pfc. Hensel was in Austin's Battalion.

This is all so very sad and I still "don't get it." But with no choice but to live with it, we have to try and cope.

Having a blog will be good for you. It's been a great outlet for me.
